A vacation in the Dominican Republic is simply not complete without a trip to Saona Island. Often called Paradise, this island is just off the coast of the Dominican Republic’s Southeast tip near La Romana. The Island was first discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492 when he was voyaging to the America’s and today is home to stunning dusty white sand beaches, colorful sea life, tropical birds and a breathtaking government protected park. This tropical, awe-inspiring private Island is a very popular tourist destination.
Excursions to the Island are an all day adventure, lasting around 8 hours, depending on where you are staying in the Dominican Republic. The touring company will pick you up at your hotel or resort first thing in the morning and return you around dinner time. Dreams La Romana offers “beach pick up” for this excursion! Your transfer is from beach to beach.
The trip to the Island is slow paced as you will set sail on a catamaran. As you enjoy the warm tropical sunshine and sea air, you will be immersed in the natural beauty of the Island as you travel along the coast. As you sail around
Saona on the catamaran ride, make sure your camera is ready as these are pictures you won’t want to miss. Your English speaking tour guide will enhance your journey, revealing the history of the island and more.
When you arrive at the Island, it will be time to enjoy a plentiful BBQ lunch on the white pristine sandy beach. Lunch is included in your excursion and you can also enjoy beverages of your choice and listen to the Caribbean music as you dine and are awed by the view. Spend the afternoon exploring the beach, swimming in the water, playing beach volleyball or just laying around in a hammock. No matter what your desire you will have a fun filled afternoon.
When it is time to depart, get ready for the speedboat ride of your life. Contrary to your trip to Saona Island, your trip back will not be quite so leisurely. Instead, it will be a bit thrilling. You will have time to catch your breath however, when you make a stop at the Natural Swimming Pool in the middle of the ocean. Although you are far from the shore you can jump off the boat into waist deep water. Grab a cocktail if you wish and wade around in the crystal clear turquoise water. Be sure to have your underwater camera ready as you will want to capture pictures of the tropical sea life including star fish which are plentiful here.
You will end your Saona Island visit as the speedboat returns you to the main land. Your excursion to Saona will be one you won’t soon forget.
